Common belief: "Canceling means the system shuts off"
Reality: local sensing, app access and professional dispatch are separate capabilities. SimpliSafe has basic unmonitored app controls, but push notifications require an active monitoring subscription. Cove app access and notifications stop. Ring digital alarm controls depend on subscription or legacy eligibility. Verify the exact system before canceling.
Common belief: "The equipment I'm still financing is mine to do what I want with"
Check separately: the equipment purchase or loan agreement, the monitoring agreement, and the new provider’s compatibility requirements. Paying off equipment does not make it compatible with a different platform. Use the lender named on your own documents.
Common belief: "ADT will come pick up the equipment when I cancel"
Read the ownership clause: current ADT online terms describe customer ownership unless agreed otherwise in writing, while an older residential form describes ADT ownership unless separately agreed. Ask what your signed agreement requires before removing or discarding equipment.
Common belief: "I can reuse my ADT or Vivint sensors with the next monitoring company"
Check each model: give the receiving provider your panel, sensor and camera model numbers. Ask which items it supports, whether reprogramming or an adapter is needed, and what that costs. A provider’s brand name alone cannot settle compatibility.
Common belief: "Ring cameras die when I cancel alarm monitoring"
Reality: Ring camera live view, stored video and professional alarm monitoring are different features. Confirm which subscription preserves the recording features you need before downgrading or canceling.

What you own
Read your signed ownership and return provisions. Do not treat possession, full payment or a service cancellation as proof of ownership or compatibility. Ask ADT to identify any required returns and request a written assessment from the receiving provider before buying replacement hardware.
What you may still owe
ADT’s published monitoring terms say ADT may charge 75% on remaining monthly service charges during the initial term, and no contract termination charge in the subsequent 30-day renewal periods. Apply this only if it matches your agreement. Hypothetical example: $49.99 × 18 months × 75% = $674.87. This excludes any other balance; request an itemized final amount. Reuse check: ask the receiving provider for a model-by-model list of reusable equipment and required replacements. Include any takeover, programming or installation charges. Do not budget for either complete reuse or complete replacement before that assessment.

Vivint describes equipment financing as a separate lender agreement and monitoring as a separate charge. Check your lender, balance, installment schedule and any payoff conditions. What you own
Vivint’s ownership FAQ says upfront purchasers own their equipment and financed purchasers own it after paying the balance. Check your purchase and financing documents for your obligations. Ownership does not establish whether the devices will work with another provider.
Reuse check: list alarm sensors separately from locks, thermostats and cameras. Ask the receiving provider about each exact model and any required reset, enrollment or replacement. Do not assume a smart-home accessory’s Z-Wave support means the alarm sensors use the same radio system.

SimpliSafe retains basic unmonitored functions, with limits
Without a plan, SimpliSafe retains local alarm functions and internet-connected app arming/disarming and camera live view. Its support says push notifications require an active monitoring subscription. Canceling professional monitoring also removes dispatch and monitored backup features.

Check your purchase or financing records separately from the monitoring plan. Buying equipment upfront avoids an equipment loan; canceling monitoring does not automatically settle any separate payment obligation. Confirm final billing and any return or reactivation terms.
Reusability verdict: verify sensor compatibility with the receiving system. SimpliSafe’s unmonitored option retains basic app controls and local operation, but it does not include professional dispatch or subscription-only alerts.

Ring Alarm (professional dispatch) and Ring cameras (cloud recording) are separate product lines that share an app. You can cancel professional alarm monitoring and keep camera storage — or vice versa. Understand which part you're canceling before you act.

What you own / what you owe
Check the Ring hardware purchase and any financing separately from the subscription. Canceling a plan does not itself refund equipment or cancel a loan. Confirm return eligibility with the seller and the subscription end date in your account.
Reuse check: confirm any proposed sensor transfer with the receiving system’s support team. You can evaluate keeping Ring cameras separately from replacing an alarm system. Check camera access, the recording subscription and any desired integrations before canceling or downgrading.

Cove: panel access remains, app access and notifications stop
Cove says cancellation ends app access and security notifications, while arming and disarming from the panel remain available. Ask for the service end date and final amount; do not assume every account has no equipment balance.

Local recording and paid services vary by model. Before canceling a camera plan, check the storage hardware, recording mode and playback access for the specific setup.
Eufy
Identify the exact eufy camera and storage device. Check whether it records to built-in storage, a card or a compatible HomeBase, and what changes when the selected service ends. Do not assume one model’s local-recording behavior applies to the whole range.
Wyze
Do not assume newer Wyze cameras include free cloud event video. Basic service can provide event thumbnails, while video storage depends on the camera and an eligible subscription or legacy Cam Plus Lite entitlement. Check the exact model and account; local recording is a separate capability.
Arlo
Check the exact Arlo camera and base-station compatibility, required storage media and playback method. Ask which recordings and alerts remain after the selected subscription ends; a USB port or the word SmartHub alone is not a complete compatibility check.
Abode
Abode CUE is an automation engine, not the name of a professional monitoring service. Running CUE automations requires a Standard or Pro plan. Check current monitoring options and exact device compatibility separately before canceling a plan or reusing sensors.

Understanding your post-cancel situation requires separating three things that are often conflated:
Fully owned equipment
An upfront purchase can leave no equipment loan, but check ownership, return and service terms separately. Paid-off hardware does not eliminate a distinct monitoring obligation.
Applies to customers who paid the full equipment purchase price upfront
Equipment under financing
You are making loan payments. The equipment is in your home, but the financial obligation continues regardless of whether monitoring is active or canceled.
Applies to any customer with equipment financing, including relevant Vivint or Cove accounts
Under a monitoring contract with ETF
An agreement may charge for ending service during its initial term. Read the applicable formula, exceptions, notice requirements and renewal provisions; ask for an itemized amount. Check ownership and any equipment balance separately.

What to ask about compatibility
Ask the receiving provider to check the panel, sensor model, radio protocol and supported software together. SimpliSafe documents its own RF system; Abode publishes specific hub and third-party-device lists. A shared radio label does not by itself establish that the new system can enroll a device or monitor its alarm events.
Most people leaving a monitored contract fall into one of three lanes. Pick yours before you shop.
Still want professional monitoring: choose a no-contract monitored system and check the true monthly cost first.
Want no monthly fee: local storage cameras and a self-monitored setup can cover most homes for $0 a month.
Want cameras only: a doorbell and one floodlight camera cover the front of most homes.

I have Vivint and still have an equipment loan
Get the current balance and payment terms from the lender named on your equipment agreement. Separately ask Vivint about ending service. Compare staying and switching over the same period; count any equipment balance once, without adding both a payoff and the same future installments.
I have ADT and want to know my exit cost
Ask ADT for your service term, notice deadline, proposed end date and itemized cancellation amount. Compare leaving now with staying over the same time period, including any equipment balance and replacement costs. A calculator estimate is not account confirmation.
I want monthly monitoring and no equipment loan
Compare the monitoring features and cancellation terms you need. If you want to avoid equipment debt, choose an upfront purchase and check the order documents. A month-to-month service does not automatically mean there is no separate loan.
