Security cameras with local storage: compare the complete setup
Want saved video without a recording subscription? Start with the exact camera and storage hardware. Then check how you will open yesterday's clip. A free live view does not establish that recordings are being saved.

DOORBELL · ONBOARD STORAGE
Eufy Video Doorbell E340
Has 8 GB built into the doorbell and can work standalone; a HomeBase is not required for onboard recording. Its two cameras include a downward view for the doorstep. Manufacturer specifications and limits.
Budget for: the doorbell, suitable installation and any optional chime or storage expansion you choose. Confirm power and mounting compatibility.
Important trade-off: onboard event storage is not a promise of continuous recording or a fixed number of days. Cloud backup and thumbnail notifications can send data to the cloud. Budget for: the camera, compatible card and power accessories appropriate to the installation.
Playback: use the app's SD Card control for local recordings. Wyze's playback guidance also covers the Cam v4 control.
Fits this need: a powered camera where managing a card in each device is acceptable. Card capacity and settings affect how much history remains.

OUTDOOR CAMERA · SEPARATE HUB
Arlo Pro 5S + compatible SmartHub + storage
The camera can record locally through a compatible hub and storage device. For Direct Storage Access in the app, Arlo specifies SmartHub VMB5000 or VMB4540. Use compatible microSD storage with VMB5000 or USB storage with VMB4540. Pro 5S manual.
Budget for: the camera, exact hub and compatible storage; check what the retailer bundle actually includes.
Important trade-off: Direct Storage Access works on the home network after setup. Away-from-home access needs additional network configuration; Arlo recommends a VPN. The app shows local clips from the last 30 days; older clips still saved on the card or USB drive require a computer. This app window does not guarantee 30 days of stored footage. Fits this need: an Arlo owner or buyer comfortable checking hub compatibility and playback setup before committing.

Local storage, cloud storage and live view are different
Local storage saves video on a device at the property. It does not, by itself, prove offline operation, remote playback, zero cloud communication or professional alarm response.
Cloud storage keeps recordings off-site under the provider's plan and retention rules. It can protect an uploaded copy if local hardware is lost; it does not guarantee that every incident was captured or uploaded.
Live view shows what is happening now. For example, Ring offers ordinary Live View without a subscription, while reviewing recorded video requires one. Ring's live-versus-recorded distinction.

Compare the full setup cost
Hardware + required accessories + installation + service over the same period. Include tax, financing and any replacement storage you expect to need. Compare setups that perform the same recording job.
A simple example
Suppose one complete setup costs $120 more upfront and avoids a $12 monthly recording charge. The extra hardware cost is recovered after 10 months: $120 ÷ $12 = 10.
This is illustrative arithmetic, not current product pricing. It assumes equivalent useful features, constant fees and no other cost differences. If the new setup still has fees, use the monthly difference. If you already own a suitable camera, keeping it may cost less than replacing it.

Before you buy: five checks
- See the right place. Check mounting permission, power, Wi-Fi and whether the view covers the delivery area.
- Save the right footage. Confirm event or continuous recording, required storage and overwrite behavior.
- Open a saved clip. Follow the model's playback instructions; verify home and away access separately.
- Check interruptions. Ask what happens during power or internet loss. This guide has not tested either condition.
- Check the cart. Match the model, hub/card, seller, warranty, returns and optional plans to the setup you intend to buy.
Already canceling a plan? Follow the provider's instructions to preserve any old cloud clips you want. What happens to existing clips is a separate question from whether new ones will be saved.
Common questions
Does no subscription mean no ongoing costs?
No. Required hardware, electricity, internet, maintenance and optional services still belong in the budget. The relevant question is whether your chosen recording function requires a paid plan.
Will local recordings work when the internet goes down?
Do not assume so from the storage label. Recording, app sign-in, playback and notifications can have different requirements. Check the exact model and configuration; no outage performance was tested for this comparison.
Are camera recordings the same as alarm monitoring?
No. A camera saving a clip does not establish that a monitoring center will review it or request emergency response. Evaluate the equipment and service terms separately.
Where should I start for front-door deliveries?
Use the front-door guide to compare placement, installation and recording requirements. A camera can help document an incident but cannot guarantee prevention.
