Best cameras for package theft: choose the right porch coverage

Start with a camera that can see the delivery spot and approaching visitors. Then decide how you will save recordings and respond to alerts. Cameras can help you check a delivery and document an incident; they cannot guarantee a package remains on your porch.

Can your camera see the delivery spot?

Before replacing a camera, try this with an empty box. This is a check you can perform at home, not a claim that we tested the products below.

  1. Place: put the box where deliveries actually land. Keep steps and walkways clear.
  2. View: open live view. Check the whole box, doorstep and approach. If the box falls below the frame, consult your exact model's mounting guidance before changing its angle.
  3. Replay: walk up, leave the box and replay the saved event. Confirm that the approach and delivery are recorded and that you can download the clip.
  4. Repeat after dark: look for glare, obstructions and missing detail. Live view alone does not prove a recording will be available later.

Use what you find: a missing delivery spot calls for a view or placement change; missing playback calls for a recording, storage or plan check. More resolution alone cannot show an area outside the frame.

Mounting reference: Ring's model-specific wedge and corner guidance. Follow the instructions for the exact device and obtain installation permission where needed.

Which setup fits your front door?

  • Packages sit right below the doorbell: start with the Eufy E340. Its downward camera and built-in storage address two useful needs; check power, Wi-Fi and the installed view.
  • You want a powered Ring doorbell: compare the Wired Doorbell Pro example. Budget for a recording plan and verify the model offered.
  • Deliveries land beyond the door: consider an Arlo Pro 5S outdoor camera aimed at that area. Choose cloud recording or a compatible local-storage setup before buying.
  • You have a SimpliSafe Gen 3 system: check the Video Doorbell Series 2, its wiring requirements and the camera features included in your plan.

Before buying: mark the delivery spot and allowed mounting position on a simple porch sketch. Compare the exact model’s vertical view and mounting guidance; a wide street view alone does not establish that a package below the lens will be visible. Then confirm power, Wi-Fi, recording storage and recurring cost. Arrange prompt pickup or a delivery alternative when you will be away.

How these examples were selected: the four options below illustrate different mounting, storage and system needs. Key buying requirements and listed U.S. recording-plan prices checked October 5, 2026. This comparison uses manufacturer documentation; we have not completed hands-on testing or measured theft-prevention results.

Illustrated buying lesson · three quick checks

Would your camera show the package?

Try the view, replay and pickup decisions before comparing camera setups. No sign-up or security score.

Read the three checks and their explanations
  1. Check the delivery spot and the visitor

A broad street view may miss a package below the lens. Check the exact model at your available mounting position, including obstructions. Confirm the real view when a preview is available. These drawings cannot predict a camera’s coverage.

  2. Check whether the earlier event can be replayed

Live view shows the current picture. An alert or higher resolution is not proof of a saved clip. Confirm that a recording was captured and remains available; check storage, retention, plan or trial terms, settings, power and connectivity for the exact setup.

  3. Make an authorized pickup or delivery plan

An alert does not move a package. Agree on a person willing and authorized to collect it, an eligible collection point or another delivery option you can use. Include a fallback when an alert is missed or the person is unavailable. A camera does not guarantee prevention.

Why is my porch camera washed out at night?

A nearby surface can bounce a camera’s infrared (IR) light back toward its lens, leaving a bright patch and a darker view beyond it. That is one possible cause, not a diagnosis for every camera. Eufy’s reflection guidance.

  • Wall or door frame beside the lens: Eufy advises changing the camera’s angle or moving a nearby reflective object. Follow your exact model’s mounting instructions and use compatible accessories. Keep the delivery spot in view when adjusting the angle. Eufy support.
  • Camera looking through a window: the glass itself can reflect IR. If your model allows its IR light to be disabled, test the view after dark before keeping that setting. The scene may need visible outdoor lighting; a clearer picture also does not prove motion detection works reliably through glass. TP-Link’s glass-reflection explanation; Eufy’s window-viewing guidance.

Change one thing at a time, then check the delivery spot in live view and in a saved recording, if recording is enabled. If the result is still poor, ask the manufacturer about your exact model and installation before buying a replacement. A wedge, different angle or IR setting will not solve every cause of glare.

Ring Wired Doorbell Pro

Formerly Video Doorbell Pro 2, this model has a 150° horizontal and 150° vertical view, two-way talk and powered installation requirements. Check that its mounting angle shows where parcels actually land. Ring model specifications →

Model note: This example describes the 2021 Wired Doorbell Pro (formerly Video Doorbell Pro 2). Browse Ring’s store for current doorbell models and availability; specifications vary by model.

Saved recordings and package alerts require an eligible paid plan. Ring Solo is $4.99/month or $49.99/year for one camera. Ring Multi is $9.99/month or $99.99/year for cameras at one location. Ring Pro is $19.99/month or $199.99/year and adds eligible, enrolled alarm monitoring to Multi’s features. Hardware and tax are extra. A multi-camera recording setup does not require Pro solely because it has more than one camera. Current U.S. plans →

A package-detection event is not automatically an intrusion alarm or dispatch request. Ring Alarm requires separate hardware and configuration. Package alerts can miss small or unusual deliveries. Alarm requirements · Package-alert limitations

Fit check: Consider this if the doorway has suitable power and you want Ring camera features. Confirm the exact model and subscription at checkout.

Eufy Video Doorbell E340

This specific dual-camera doorbell provides a visitor view and a downward package view, with 8GB of built-in local storage. A HomeBase is not required for its onboard recording. Storage capacity and recording settings determine retention; local recordings do not require a recording subscription. E340 features and compatibility →

Local storage does not mean every feature stays entirely off the cloud: Eufy documents cloud recording and thumbnail-notification exceptions. Review the services you enable. Eufy privacy details →

Check before buying: E340 needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and does not support Apple HomeKit. Its removable battery must stay installed even when doorbell wiring supplies power. Confirm your mounting position shows the delivery spot, then match the E340 model and included accessories at checkout. Read Eufy’s compatibility answers →

Two different E340 products: the Video Doorbell E340 above uses a battery, including when wired. The Floodlight Cam E340 requires hardwired AC power and separate storage. It is not a battery floodlight with built-in recording storage.

What still works after your camera’s subscription trial ends?

If you miss a delivery alert, will there be a recording to watch later? For these three models, live viewing can continue without a recording plan. Saving clips works differently.

U.S. manufacturer documents checked October 5, 2026. This comparison covers event clips, not continuous recording. It is based on documentation, not our own product tests.

Ring Wired Doorbell Pro

2021 model; formerly Video Doorbell Pro 2

Saved event clips need a plan.

What stays without a plan?
Live view, two-way talk and basic motion/doorbell alerts. Person/package alerts need an eligible plan.
How do you keep a clip?
Download important trial clips before expiry. Ring says trial recordings are deleted when the trial ends.
What should you budget?
Solo: $4.99/month or $49.99/year for one device, plus tax; up to 180 days of cloud history.

Eufy Video Doorbell E340

Doorbell model T8214

Records to built-in storage without a recording plan.

What stays without a plan?
Live view, two-way talk, notifications and onboard human/package detection. Its 8GB storage is a standard feature, not a trial benefit.
How do you keep a clip?

Arlo Pro 5S 2K

Local clips need a paired, configured hub and storage.

What stays without a plan?
Live view, two-way talk and basic motion alerts. Smart detections and Activity Zones need a plan.
How do you keep a clip?
VMB4540 + USB or VMB5000 + microSD can use Direct Storage Access. Home-network app playback needs setup; access away from home needs extra configuration. Stored files can also be read on a computer.
What should you budget?
No subscription for local recording; buy compatible hub and storage. Optional single-camera cloud recording: $9.99/month or $95.88/year, with 60-day history.

After-trial features · Local access requirements · Plan details

Annual plans are billed yearly. Prices above are plan fees; hardware, applicable tax and optional extras are additional. Confirm your account’s terms. Power, connection, permissions and recording settings still matter.

Before your trial ends, check three things

  1. Save one important clip. Download it and open the file to confirm you have a usable copy.
  2. Find where new recordings will be saved. For Arlo local recording, the camera must be paired to the compatible hub and recording enabled. A camera connected only to router Wi-Fi does not use this storage path.
  3. Try retrieving a clip the way you will need it. Check playback on your phone, including access away from home if that matters to you.

Choose the history, alerts and access you need, then compare the complete cost of setups that provide them.

Compare your 1- and 3-year costs
Model notes and supporting sources
  • Eufy: its 90-day estimate assumes 30 clips a day at 20 seconds each; it is not guaranteed retention. Thumbnail notifications may send images through the cloud. Optional cloud pricing is not included.
  • Arlo: Direct Storage Access shows the last 30 days of local recordings in-app. Older files still on the storage need computer access. This is not free cloud history; capacity and overwrite settings affect what remains.
  • Existing cloud clips: Arlo/Eufy deletion timing was not verified. Do not assume expired or deleted clips can be recovered.
  • Further setup sources: E340 user guide; Eufy recording without cloud backup; Arlo Pro 5S manual (PDF); Arlo paid-plan features.

Compare your complete camera costs

Enter two setups that meet the same recording needs. Include required cards, hubs, installation, tax and switching charges in the upfront amount. If keeping a camera you already own, enter only new costs from today; do not count its old purchase price again.

Option A — keep or buy
Option B — alternative

Enter all four amounts, including 0 where appropriate.

Formula: upfront cost + months × ongoing cost. For a yearly plan, use its annual price ÷ 12; the model spreads that charge evenly and does not show billing dates. Assumes unchanged fees and comparable useful features. Include other known costs in your entries; this is not a provider quote or a savings guarantee.

Features and delivery arrangements to check

Delivery-zone view

Check the floor, steps and approach in the actual image. Horizontal and diagonal viewing angles are different measurements; a single angle does not establish coverage.

Detection settings

Where supported, configure motion or package zones, then test a normal delivery. Size, placement, lighting and sensitivity can affect recognition; alerts can be delayed or missed.

Recording and playback

Verify event length, any pre-event buffer, subscription requirements and how to export a clip. Check available storage and overwrite behavior before relying on footage.

Two-way audio

Use supported audio to give delivery instructions remotely. It depends on a working connection and someone available to respond; it does not guarantee deterrence.

Lighting and installation

Assess the image after dark and position lighting to avoid glare. Choose suitable weather protection, power and a secure mount; obtain permission where required.

Response and delivery options

Decide who will collect deliveries and check alerts. For valuable items or absences, ask about eligible pickup, signature or locker options.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service recommends prompt collection, arranging pickup when away, Hold for Pickup and signature confirmation for important mail. Check eligibility with the carrier or seller. Postal package-protection guidance →

Frequently asked questions

Does a doorbell camera alone stop package theft?

No camera guarantees prevention. A suitable camera can show a delivery, notify you of supported events and save footage if correctly configured. Prompt collection, eligible pickup services or a secure delivery location can reduce the time a package sits unattended.

Which is better for package theft: Ring or Arlo?

Compare the delivery area and installation needs. The Ring Wired Doorbell Pro example covers a powered doorway; an Arlo Pro 5S can be placed at another suitable outdoor location. Both brands offer alarm-system options. Choose by the required view, storage, plan and response rather than a blanket brand ranking.

Do I need professional monitoring for package theft protection?

You can use compatible camera alerts and recordings without professional alarm monitoring. Decide separately whether you want intrusion-alarm response or a supported live-video monitoring service. A camera detecting a package does not by itself mean a monitoring center will request emergency dispatch.

What about package lockers or safes?

A suitable delivery box, locker or pickup service can reduce the time a package sits openly on the porch; none guarantees that theft will be prevented. Check package size, secure installation, carrier participation, access and delivery instructions. For USPS shipments, review eligible Hold for Pickup and signature options.
