What Happens to Your Security System During a Power Outage?

An alarm staying powered does not prove that cameras are recording or that a monitoring center can receive a signal. Check backup power, communication and recording separately for your exact equipment and plan. This guide uses manufacturer documentation; we have not performed outage tests.

Direct answer: A charged backup battery may keep supported alarm functions operating for a limited time. Cellular backup can carry alarm signals only when the equipment, service and cellular connection are working. Camera recording and live viewing have separate power, network and storage requirements. Neither battery backup nor cellular backup guarantees uninterrupted protection.

What may keep working during a power outage

Base station / control panel

Check the exact panel, charged battery and functions retained on backup. SimpliSafe documents up to 24 hours for its current Base Station; that is not a guaranteed runtime for every system or accessory.

Door and window sensors

Battery-powered sensors do not rely on household power for their own supply. They still need working batteries and a functioning connection to the alarm panel. Check each model rather than assuming a three-to-five-year battery life.

Siren / alarm output

For example, Ring documents that its alarm siren remains available when the Base Station is offline. Confirm power, battery condition and the retained functions of your own panel and any separate siren.

Cellular alarm communication

An enabled, supported cellular alarm connection can provide a path when home broadband is down. It still depends on panel power, the required service and a working carrier connection; it does not supply internet to every camera.

Smart locks

Battery-powered locks may retain local keypad or thumbturn operation while remote features stop working. Check the model's battery status, local-entry options and backup-entry instructions.

Battery-powered cameras

A charged camera battery does not establish outage recording. Arlo documents local USB recording during an internet outage only when the compatible camera and hub remain powered and local storage is configured. Check the complete recording path.

Functions that can fail during an outage

Wired/PoE cameras (without UPS)

A wired camera needs backup power at its actual power source. If it records through a hub, recorder or network switch, those required devices also need power. Backing up only the camera or only the router may leave a gap.

Live camera streaming

A camera that uses home Wi-Fi needs that network for its normal live-view path. Remote access also needs a working internet connection. Keeping the router powered does not fix an upstream service outage; cellular-capable cameras have different requirements.

Broadband alarm communication

A broadband-only alarm path can fail when its router, modem or internet service fails. Check which alternate communication path your installed system actually supports and whether it is enabled.

Smart home automations

Hub-dependent automations (auto-lock on arm, smart light control) may not trigger if the hub loses power — even if individual devices have battery backup.

Battery backup vs cellular backup: how they're different

These are two separate and complementary protections that address different failure modes:

On a narrow screen, swipe the table sideways to see every column. Keyboard users can focus the table and use the arrow keys.

Backup type What it protects against How it works Duration
Battery backup Power outage (no electricity) Base station runs on internal rechargeable battery Model- and battery-dependent; use the specified limit
Cellular backup Internet outage (broadband down) Alarm signals route over 4G LTE cellular network Requires equipment power, enabled service and a working carrier connection
Both combined Power + internet outage simultaneously Backup power supports the panel; cellular may carry alarm signals Limited by battery charge and the available communication path

Treat alarm power, alarm communication and camera operation as separate checks. Ring, for example, distinguishes Alarm Cellular Backup from Alarm Pro backup internet. Alarm Pro turns off Wi-Fi and most features on its internal battery; Ring documents additional backup-power requirements for continuing its internet service. Do not assume an alarm backup also powers cameras or a home network.

Examples to verify before choosing

Vivint

Check the installed panel and cameras

Vivint lists 24-hour backup and built-in cellular for the Smart Hub Pro 2 (VS-SHP200-001). That panel specification does not power the hardwired Outdoor Camera Pro. Confirm the exact installed models, camera power and recording requirements, enabled monitoring service and cellular connection before relying on outage backup.

Ask before buying: Which panel and camera models are included, what works without power or internet, and what equipment, monitoring and backup options cost in the written quote?

SimpliSafe

Check battery and monitoring conditions

SimpliSafe documents up to 24 hours of Base Station battery backup. Cellular alarm communication requires professional monitoring and working cellular service. During a power outage, its support instructions say to use the Keypad to arm or disarm; remote app control is unavailable until power returns. Cameras have separate power and Wi-Fi requirements.

Plan distinction: SimpliSafe lists Standard at $22.99/month with built-in network backup, but no camera recordings. Self-Monitoring with Camera Recordings is $9.99/month and excludes professional monitoring. Prices checked September 16, 2026; confirm the current plan and price before subscribing.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to my security system when the power goes out? +
Supported alarm functions may switch to a charged backup battery, but runtime and retained features depend on the exact panel. Alarm communication requires a working, enabled connection. Cameras, network equipment and smart-home features need their own power and connectivity checks.
How long does a home security system's battery backup last? +
There is no single duration for every system. SimpliSafe documents up to 24 hours for its current Base Station, and Ring lists up to 24 hours depending on use for its standard Alarm Base Station while limiting other features. Use the documentation for your exact panel and check battery condition.
Do security cameras work during a power outage? +
Only if the complete recording setup can still operate. A camera battery supplies power, not guaranteed recording. A local camera or recorder may need a powered hub, switch and configured storage. Arlo documents continued local USB recording during an internet outage when the compatible camera and hub stay powered. Verify live viewing separately.
Will my alarm still contact the monitoring center if my internet is down? +
An enabled cellular alarm connection can provide an alternative to failed broadband if the panel has power, the required service is active and the carrier connection works. Check the exact system and plan. Alarm cellular backup is not automatically backup internet for cameras or other devices.
Does a smart lock stop working during a power outage? +
A battery-powered smart lock may retain local operation while network-dependent features are unavailable. Schlage documents this distinction for its battery-operated locks. Check your model's battery status, local-entry options and backup instructions.
What is the difference between battery backup and cellular backup for a security system? +
Battery backup supplies limited power to supported equipment. Cellular alarm backup provides another communication path for alarm signals when broadband is unavailable. Both have conditions; neither proves that camera recording, remote viewing or every smart-home feature continues.
Will SimpliSafe keep working during a storm that knocks out both power and internet? +
It may retain supported alarm functions: SimpliSafe documents up to 24 hours of Base Station battery backup and cellular communication with eligible professional monitoring. Continued communication still requires battery power and working cellular service. Camera recording and remote access have separate requirements, so do not assume the whole system works normally during a storm.
