If you're reading this while a rep is waiting:
Say: "I need 24 hours to review this before I make a decision." That is a complete and reasonable response. ADT's 36-month contract creates a financial commitment of $1,600–$2,200+ — it deserves at least one day of independent review before signing.
ADT is the most recognized home security brand in the US and offers a legitimate, professionally-installed system. It's also sold through a mix of ADT employees and authorized dealers, with a 36-month contract and a 75% early termination fee that is very commonly misunderstood at the point of sale. This guide covers what's actually happening and what to do next.

ADT's sales model has four elements that shape the door-knock situation:
Authorized dealer vs. ADT Corporate
ADT sells through both direct employees (ADT Corporate) and an authorized dealer network. Dealers can use ADT branding and sell ADT systems, but they are independently owned businesses. The rep at your door may or may not be an ADT employee. Ask directly — the answer affects who is accountable for your installation and what recourse you have if something goes wrong.
The 36-month contract
ADT professionally installed plans require a 36-month monitoring contract. If you cancel before 36 months, the early termination fee is approximately 75% of your remaining contract balance. This is a binding contract term, not a negotiating point at the door. A 36-month contract at $52.99/month = $1,907.64 in monitoring commitments. Know what you're signing before you sign it.
The rate-variation risk
ADT monthly rates vary by region, promotion, and dealer. The rate the rep quotes verbally and the rate in the contract can differ — the contract rate is what you're actually agreeing to. Always read the monitoring fee in the contract before signing. Also ask whether the rate is locked for the full 36-month term or subject to annual increases.
The FTC Cooling-Off Rule protects you for 3 business days
For any in-home sale of $25 or more, federal law gives you 3 business days to cancel without penalty. ADT is required to provide written notice of this right at the time of sale. If you signed today and change your mind, this law applies — invoke it in writing immediately. Send a written cancellation notice by certified mail to both ADT and the dealer (if applicable).

Assuming the rep is an ADT employee
ADT's dealer network is large and active. The rep at your door may be employed by an independent company with ADT authorization, not by ADT Corporate. This affects complaint resolution, post-install accountability, and who you call if something goes wrong. Always ask directly, and get the dealer company name in writing if they are not ADT Corporate staff.
Not calculating the ETF before signing
ADT's ETF is approximately 75% of your remaining contract balance — not a flat fee, and not a small amount in the early years. At month 6 of a 36-month contract at $52.99/month, you would owe roughly (30 × $52.99 × 0.75) = $1,192 to cancel. This is not an edge case — it's the standard exit cost for early cancellation. Calculate this before you sign.
Trusting the verbal rate over the written contract rate
ADT rates vary by region, promotion, and dealer. If the verbal quote and the contract show different numbers, the contract governs. Read the monitoring fee in the service agreement itself — not just the quote summary — before signing. If the numbers don't match what you were told, ask for a written addendum before proceeding.
Not using the FTC Cooling-Off Rule after signing under pressure
Federal law gives you 3 business days to cancel any in-home sale. ADT is required to provide written notice of this right at time of sale — if they didn't, the window may extend further. If you signed under pressure and changed your mind the next morning, this law is available to you. Use it. Send written cancellation by certified mail immediately and do not wait for a phone response.
ADT equipment doesn't transfer to other providers
ADT professionally installed equipment is proprietary. If you cancel ADT, your existing sensors and keypads cannot be reprogrammed for SimpliSafe, Ring, or any other provider — you'll need new equipment when switching. Factor equipment replacement cost into your total analysis if comparing ADT against a DIY alternative.
These six items must be confirmed in writing — not verbal — before you sign an ADT contract:
