Home Security Checklist 2026

Walk through each section, mark what needs attention, and choose the features that fit your home.

Entry Points

  • ✓All exterior doors have deadbolt locks (Grade 1 or 2)
  • ✓Check the strike plate and reinforcement against the lock maker’s installation guide; confirm the bolt extends fully and locks smoothly.
  • ✓Sliding glass doors have a bar or pin lock
  • ✓Garage door opener code changed from factory default
  • ✓Smart locks have auto-lock enabled

Cameras

  • ✓Front door covered by a video doorbell or outdoor camera
  • ✓Back and side entry points covered
  • ✓Cameras have night vision or colour night vision
  • ✓Check whether cameras save event clips or continuous video, how long recordings remain, and how to save an important clip before it expires or is overwritten.
  • ✓Camera credentials changed from factory defaults

Alarms & Monitoring

  • ✓Alarm system installed (DIY or professional)
  • ✓Agree who checks alarm alerts and contacts help; confirm monitoring is active if you use it. Check which functions work during internet and power outages for your exact system and plan.
  • ✓Entry sensors on all ground-floor windows and doors
  • ✓Motion sensor in main living area or hallway
  • ✓Keypad code shared only with trusted household members

Lighting & Deterrence

  • ✓Motion-activated lights at front and back of property
  • ✓Timer on indoor lights when away
  • ✓Security signage visible at main entry points
  • ✓Overgrown shrubs near windows trimmed back

Network & App Security

  • ✓Wi-Fi router firmware updated to latest version
  • ✓Enable two-factor authentication on your security account where available.
  • ✓Consider a separate network for cameras and other connected devices where supported; follow device/router instructions and confirm app access, recording and alerts still work.
  • ✓Router admin password changed from factory default
