The contract difference is the real comparison

Before comparing monthly prices, check the initial term, cancellation notice, equipment ownership and any separate financing. Then check whether each proposed system covers the same doors, windows and camera locations.

• ADT: The current advertised professional-install offer uses a 36-month monitoring term (24 months in California). Its early termination provision may charge 75% of the remaining service charges in the initial term. Other offers, ADT Blu and existing customer agreements can differ.
• SimpliSafe: Monitoring is monthly, without a long-term commitment. That does not erase equipment purchases or any separate financing obligations.

Hypothetical fee example: If your agreement applies a 75% charge to 18 remaining service payments of $49.99, the arithmetic is 18 × $49.99 × 0.75 = $674.87. This is not a current ADT package price or a payoff quote. Ask the provider to confirm the actual fee and any separate balance.

Moving, changing plans or canceling can have different consequences under different agreements. Get the relevant terms in writing before purchase; staying at the same address does not make a contract risk-free.

How to compare 3-year costs: hypothetical quotes

These are invented quotes to demonstrate the calculation, not current ADT or SimpliSafe prices or a typical-home savings claim. Add any installation, taxes, financing charges and optional services. Use the same equipment needs and time period for both quotes; do not count financed equipment twice.

Monitoring: compare features, not unsupported response times

ADT: Its monitoring offers can include text-based alarm verification and optional video verification with compatible equipment and enrollment. Check the services available for the system in your quote.

SimpliSafe: Professional monitoring and camera-assisted agent features depend on the selected plan, compatible cameras and required permissions. Core, Pro and Pro Plus are different service tiers; do not treat every camera or plan as interchangeable.

What this comparison cannot tell you: We have not run a controlled response-time test. Alarm verification, a request for emergency dispatch and a responder arriving are different events. Neither a brand name nor a published feature list establishes which service will respond faster to your emergency.

Installation: who does the work, and what must be tested?

ADT: For a professionally installed offer, ask which devices, wiring work, setup and tests the quoted installation includes. Existing wired sensors, detached buildings and separately controlled areas need a specific compatibility and installation plan.

SimpliSafe: Confirm the mounting method and setup instructions for each chosen device. If you want professional help, obtain the installation scope and price before buying. Do not assume a whole home can be fitted and tested in 30 minutes.

After either type of installation, test each sensor, camera view, alert and required backup feature. A successful app setup alone does not prove coverage. This guide does not claim that a DIY and a professional installation produce identical security outcomes.

Consider an ADT offer when the documented equipment, installation support and terms solve needs that your other quotes do not:

1. You want a specific installation service. Confirm the work, training and follow-up included in the price.

2. You need help with an unusual layout or existing equipment. Require a written compatibility and coverage plan; square footage alone is not a reason to choose a brand.

3. The complete offer fits your budget and expected ownership period. Read the cancellation and equipment obligations as carefully as the monthly rate.

When a SimpliSafe quote may fit

Consider SimpliSafe when the selected devices and monthly service meet your requirements, particularly if:

• You prefer a monthly monitoring commitment and have permission to install the selected equipment.
• You want to change monitoring without a long-term service commitment, while keeping equipment costs separate.
• Its itemized total is lower for the same equipment needs and ownership period.
• You are willing to follow the setup instructions and test each device, or have priced installation help.
• You have checked which features remain without professional monitoring and which require a paid camera plan.

The ADT-to-SimpliSafe switching calculation

If you are currently in an ADT contract and considering switching:

1. Estimate your ADT ETF, then ask ADT for an itemized written cancellation quote. Include added hardware, installation and any service overlap when calculating the extra cost of switching now.

2. Calculate the monthly service difference using the actual plans you would keep or buy. Match required features and include recurring add-ons.

3. Compare switching now with waiting over the same period. If the monthly difference is positive, divide the extra switching cost by that difference for a simple break-even estimate. Check it against the months left in the existing term. Include costs that differ between the two choices; do not add the same equipment debt twice.

Hypothetical example: A $675 fee divided by $20 monthly service savings is 33.75 months. If only 18 months remain in the current term, the service savings before that term ends are $360—less than the fee, even before new equipment or installation. This arithmetic alone does not justify switching early for savings.

Higher-fee example: $1,350 divided by $25 monthly savings is 54 months. That calculation assumes the price difference persists; compare both choices over your actual remaining term and expected ownership period.

Late-term example: $225 divided by $20 is 11.25 months. If six months remain, switching saves only $120 in service before the term ends. The fee alone exceeds those savings. Being near the end of a contract does not automatically make early cancellation worthwhile.
