The equipment bundle, recording service and agreement matter more than a brand-wide “winner.”

If you want a professionally installed alarm with a Nest camera, compare the specific ADT installed offer. If you want a basic sensor system with a choice of term or no-contract pricing, compare Vivint HomeProtect. For more cameras or automation, request matched custom quotes; entry-level package prices do not answer that comparison.

A camera specification is not a performance result
Ask to see the exact camera’s field of view at your intended mounting point. Confirm power, how an event becomes a saved clip, and how you retrieve it. If you need locks, lights or a garage controller, name each device and demonstrate the routine you want. “Smart home” alone does not answer those questions.
For outage planning, ask about alarm signaling, camera recording, internet and power separately. A panel’s battery specification does not establish that every camera stays online. We have not run a direct camera or outage comparison for these offers.

ADT’s example includes a selected Nest camera; basic HomeProtect has a different equipment basket. A lower subtotal here does not establish equivalent coverage or recording. The ADT offer has eligibility and AutoPay conditions. Vivint’s FAQ also quotes installation at $199.99; with that figure, the last subtotal is $1,629.62. Confirm the final amount.
Ask for the total paid and the balance still owed
- Cash paid by your chosen date: upfront costs plus all equipment, installation and service payments through that date.
- Still owed if you stop: any lender balance, service termination charge or other amount under your actual agreements.
For example, spreading equipment across more months can reduce a monthly payment while leaving a balance after year three. A promotion can lower the initial price while adding a service term. Neither number should be hidden inside “from” pricing.
Bring the same checklist to both providers
- Each sensor, hub and camera, with model and quantity.
- The live-view, saved-video and monitored-alarm functions you expect.
- Installation work, power accessories and appointment availability.
- Current price, later price, renewal date and cancellation procedure.
- Equipment ownership, moving requirements and what stops if service ends.
- Who receives alerts and what happens when an alarm cannot be confirmed.
If insurance savings matter, ask your insurer what qualifies before including them. This guide does not rank monitoring outcomes or promise acceptance of either brand’s certificate.
Questions that change the decision
Is ADT or Vivint cheaper?
The listed offers are different packages. Compare a matched equipment list, camera recording, installation, monitoring and written service term. Use the illustrations above to understand the arithmetic, then replace every input with your actual quote.
Does the low-price Vivint HomeProtect offer have no contract?
The $199.99 equipment and free-installation promotion requires a three-year agreement. The regular no-contract HomeProtect path has different equipment, installation and monthly service prices. Keep those offers separate.
Is ADT Blu the same as an installed ADT system with Nest cameras?
No. ADT Blu is a separate DIY product family, and ADT says Nest Cams are not compatible with it. Check the exact installed system, cameras and service in the offer you receive.
Which has better cameras or smart-home integration?
This guide does not establish a comparative performance winner. Specify each camera and hub, recording method, power, supported integrations and paid features. Ask for a demonstration of the functions you will actually use.
Can I leave ADT before switching to Vivint?
First request your current service end date and itemized cancellation and equipment balances in writing. Compare those with the cost and timing of the new setup. Do not choose a switch date from a generic brand-wide cancellation formula.
Does paying for equipment settle the monitoring agreement?
No. Equipment ownership, lender payments and the monitoring service term are separate questions. Paying upfront can be part of a month-to-month offer, but a particular promotion may still require a service commitment. Read both agreements.
