How Vivint equipment payments work
By Taylor Smith · Updated September 9, 2026 · Research-based guide
The short answer: Equipment financing and monitoring service are separate obligations. A low monthly equipment payment does not tell you the full cost or whether you can cancel monitoring without a charge. Read both agreements.
What Vivint currently says
Vivint advertises an upfront equipment purchase with month-to-month monitoring, plus equipment financing over 36–60 months depending on the offer. Financing is subject to approval and a separate lender agreement; equipment and monitoring are billed separately. Some qualified buyers can receive 0% APR. Installation charges may be included in the financed total. An included charge is still a cost.
These are advertised options, not a promise that every existing account has the same terms. Check your signed service agreement for the monitoring term, renewal, notice and cancellation requirements. Source: Vivint financing and offer terms, checked September 9, 2026.
A payment example you can check
This is an illustration, not a Vivint quote: suppose equipment costs $1,800, financed at 0% over 60 months, and monitoring costs $40 per month. Assume no deposit, installation charge, taxes, fees or rate changes.
| Item | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment each month | $1,800 ÷ 60 | $30 |
| Combined monthly payment | $30 + $40 | $70 |
| Cash paid through month 36 | $70 × 36 | $2,520 |
| Equipment still unpaid after month 36 | $30 × 24 | $720 |
| Cash paid through month 60 | $1,800 + ($40 × 60) | $4,200 |
The $2,520 three-year payment total leaves $720 of equipment unpaid. Calling it the entire equipment-and-service cost would hide that remaining obligation. The five-year comparison must include all 60 monitoring payments as well as the equipment.
What changes when equipment is paid off?
The equipment installment ends when the lender confirms the balance is paid. That does not establish that your monitoring commitment has ended. Request the service end date and any payoff or cancellation calculation in writing. Paying off hardware and canceling service are different actions.
What if you cancel or move?
Do not assume that ending monitoring erases equipment debt. Ask the lender for the remaining balance and repayment rules, then ask Vivint separately about service cancellation, notice and moving options. Vivint warns that functionality, including remote connectivity, is limited without its services plan. See the system and service terms.
Seven details to get before signing
- The itemized equipment cash price, including every camera, sensor and accessory.
- The deposit, amount financed, APR, number of payments and total repayment.
- Installation and activation charges, even when rolled into financing.
- The monitoring price, included features and possible price increases.
- The service term, renewal rules, cancellation notice and any termination charge.
- What moving costs and which equipment can be reused.
- Which app, recording and alarm functions remain if you stop paying for service.
How to compare another system fairly
Use the same number of doors, cameras and months for each written offer. Match professional monitoring, recording and installation needs. Add upfront costs and every recurring payment; list debt still outstanding at the comparison date separately. A smaller monthly bill can result from a longer repayment period.
Common questions
Does a 60-month equipment loan mean 60 months of monitoring?
The loan term alone does not answer that. The financing and service documents need to be checked separately.
Is financing always interest-free?
No. The advertised 0% option depends on qualification and the offer. Use the APR and total repayment in your actual financing disclosure.
Is the phone-plan analogy useful?
It helps explain two payment streams, but it cannot establish cancellation rights, service terms or which security features work without a subscription.
