If you're pricing an Apple home security setup, count how many cameras need recordings and how many need AI summaries. Those are separate limits. Apple's 2TB iCloud+ plan supports unlimited HomeKit Secure Video recording, but AI video summaries cover only one camera. Apple's recording plans and Apple's AI camera limits spell out the difference.

Which iCloud+ plan do Apple Home cameras need?

HomeKit Secure Video, often shortened to HKSV, is Apple's service for supported security-camera recordings in the Home app. Choose the recording allowance first, then decide whether the AI features are worth an upgrade.

On a smaller screen, scroll the table sideways to compare both camera allowances.

200GB $2.99 Up to 5 cameras Not in Apple's eligible tiers

The storage label can be misleading when you're shopping specifically for cameras. HKSV recordings don't count against your iCloud storage allowance. Apple's guide describes a rolling ten-day activity history, with the home hub analyzing activity to determine what gets recorded. That should not be read as a promise of ten days of uninterrupted, 24-hour footage. Apple's recording guide

What the upgrade actually costs

Suppose you already pay for 200GB and have three compatible cameras. Here are two different choices using the listed U.S. prices:

  • Add summaries to one selected camera by moving to 2TB. The increase is $9.99 − $2.99 = $7 a month; $7 × 12 = $84 over 12 months.
  • Add summaries to all three. Apple's listed tiers put that requirement on 12TB. Moving from 200GB adds $59.99 − $2.99 = $57 a month; $57 × 12 = $684 over 12 months.

These subscription differences equal the monthly increase multiplied by 12. They exclude hardware, installation and tax, and assume unchanged prices. Extra storage and other plan benefits may also have value to you. Price source

Try summaries where descriptions would save you time, such as a busy front porch. You may be happy recording several cameras while using summaries at just one entrance.

If you already subscribe to an eligible higher tier, check the available camera allowance in your account before adding another subscription. Your existing service still has a cost even when enabling a feature does not increase the bill.

Hardware and settings to check before upgrading

An eligible iCloud+ plan is only part of the setup. Apple's requirements call for:

  • A supported HomeKit Secure Video camera.
  • An Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad belonging to the home owner for video descriptions and search.
  • A compatible, updated home hub, with Apple listing HomePod second generation, HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K as examples.
  • Apple Intelligence enabled in the Home app, with feature availability checked for the relevant language and region.

Apple lists iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16 models and later, iPhone Air, iPad mini with A17 Pro, and iPads with M1 or later among eligible iPhone and iPad hardware. An ordinary iPhone 15 is not interchangeable with an iPhone 15 Pro for this requirement. Apple's device and feature requirements

Check the exact model and software of your existing hub before replacing it. Check each camera separately, too: support for the Home app alone does not establish HKSV recording support.

Do you need to buy HomeView?

HomeView is one option for the announced Home Collection cameras, alongside compatible HomePod and Apple TV hubs. Apple includes it in the camera-feature requirements in its Home Collection announcement.

Buy a screen if its convenience matters to you, after checking whether your current hub already supports the required camera features.

How to turn on video summaries

Apple says Summarize Videos is off by default. On an eligible setup, open Home, select More, then Home Settings, Apple Intelligence and Summarize Videos. Apple also documents a Summarize Videos control within an individual HKSV camera's view. Apple's setup instructions

If the option is missing, check the owner's device, hub software, plan eligibility and feature availability before purchasing anything else. A missing setting by itself doesn't tell you which requirement is unmet.

Where Apple processes the video

For summaries, Apple describes a process in which home devices detect relevant activity and send footage to Private Cloud Compute for captions. Apple says the data is deleted from Private Cloud Compute after processing and is not accessible to Apple. Cameras with Summarize Videos disabled analyze content on the device. Recordings in the Home app are end-to-end encrypted. Apple's Home privacy explanation

That distinction is worth understanding if keeping analysis entirely local is part of your buying criteria. Separately, review who can access your Home and its recordings. Privacy promises about the service do not replace careful household permissions.

Use a summary as a shortcut to the clip. If an alert suggests a delivery, a visitor or damage, inspect the recording before drawing a conclusion or contacting someone about it.

What to know about the new LG cameras

Apple announced Home Collection on October 13, 2026, with availability beginning in December and some accessories following in early 2027. These are future hardware availability windows as of this guide's check date. Don't assume a camera can ship today because the related software feature is documented. Common questions

Does unlimited camera recording mean unlimited AI summaries?

No. Apple's recording and AI allowances are separate. Compare both camera-count columns before choosing a plan.

Is an Apple Home camera subscription free?

Recorded event history requires iCloud+. Someone already paying for a suitable plan may have no additional subscription charge, but that is different from free recording. HKSV requirements

Can I choose fewer cameras for summaries than for recording?

Apple provides a per-camera Summarize Videos control. Start with the places where descriptions are useful and keep the selected cameras within your plan's allowance. Camera settings

Does this include professional security monitoring?

The cited camera and iCloud+ features describe viewing, recordings and AI assistance. They do not establish a contracted alarm-monitoring or emergency-dispatch service. If professional response is a requirement, verify that service and its terms separately before deciding on a system.

Before you choose a plan

List your cameras, which ones need summaries, your current plan and your hub model. Compare the added monthly cost with the time summaries could save before buying hardware or upgrading.
