The short answer
Most Wi-Fi security cameras stop recording and alerting the moment your internet goes down. Professional alarm systems with cellular backup continue working. Smart alarm systems with local storage (NVR/DVR) keep recording but lose remote access. Here's what this means for each system type.
During outage: Cameras go offline. No recording, no alerts, no live view. If Ring Alarm Pro is installed with LTE backup, the alarm system continues โ but cameras still require local Wi-Fi.
Mitigation: A cellular backup router (like Ring Alarm Pro's built-in eero) maintains alarm function but not camera coverage during ISP outages.
During outage: The alarm system (sensors, siren, keypad) continues working โ SimpliSafe uses cellular by default as its primary communication path for monitoring. Door sensors, motion detectors, and dispatch still work.
Cameras: SimpliSafe cameras use Wi-Fi and go offline during internet outages โ same limitation as Ring cameras.
During outage: Both systems include cellular backup by default. Alarm monitoring, dispatch, and smart home control via cellular continue. Camera recording via local NVR (where installed) continues without internet.
Remote camera access: Requires internet to stream live footage from outside your network.
During outage: Cameras continue recording locally to the NVR hard drive โ no internet required. Remote access (viewing from your phone outside your home) requires internet.
Best for: Properties with unreliable internet or those who want continuous local recording regardless of cloud service status.
Power outages and internet outages are usually separate events. During a targeted break-in, cutting internet or power is a known tactic โ though uncommon. Here's what matters most:
For most homeowners, the right answer is: use a cellular-backed alarm system (SimpliSafe, Vivint, or ADT) as your primary protection layer, and accept that cloud cameras will be offline during outages. The alarm system is your primary deterrent and dispatch trigger โ the camera footage is secondary.
If continuous recording during outages is a priority (rental property, business, vacation home), add a local NVR camera system as a secondary layer.
