If your Apple TV helps run your smart home, check its own software update screen as well as your phone’s. Apple’s October 26 security releases make this a useful time to check each eligible device. Updating one device should not be your sign-off for the whole house. Apple’s tvOS advisory
An Apple TV used as a home hub supports remote accessory control, sharing and automations. That gives a box you may think of mainly as a streaming device a separate role worth maintaining. Apple’s home hub guide
Apple describes CVE-2026-112595 as a Thread issue through which a nearby attacker sending malicious network traffic may gain access to the Thread network. The fix improves authentication. The tvOS 27.2 advisory lists Apple TV 4K second generation and later. Apple’s tvOS advisory
Both the tvOS 27.2 and iOS and iPadOS 27.2 advisories include all three of these fixes: the Thread issue plus two HomeKit issues. The HomeKit entries cover an app potentially accessing sensitive user data, CVE-2026-86978, and malicious video processing potentially causing unexpected system termination, CVE-2026-112596. Apple describes improved checks and bounds checking respectively. Apple’s tvOS advisory, Apple’s iOS and iPadOS advisory
For iPhone and iPad, the HomeKit entries list:
These are advisory availability lists, not a claim that every listed device contains a Thread radio. Apple’s iOS and iPadOS advisory
For owners, the useful distinction is between devices, not rooms or apps. A single Home app can be your control panel while the devices behind it still need separate update checks. That is why the Apple TV belongs on the same maintenance list as your phone.
In the Home app, open More > Home Settings > Home Hubs & Bridges. Apple says the active home hub appears at the top. Use that screen to identify what is running your home, then check each eligible Apple TV separately. Apple’s home hub guide
Do this while you are home and have time to let the installation finish. If you rely on a smart lock, keep your normal backup entry method available. There is no need to test this update by unlocking a door remotely.
Apple TV: Open Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software. If an update is offered, choose Download and Install. Keep the Apple TV powered and connected throughout. For future updates, turn on Automatically Update in the same Software Updates menu. Apple’s Apple TV update instructions
iPhone or iPad: Back up the device, connect it to power and Wi-Fi, then open Settings > General > Software Update. This screen shows the installed version. Select Download and Install when offered and follow the prompts. Apple’s iPhone and iPad update instructions
Automatic updates are useful, but an enabled setting is not your completion check. Confirm the installation rather than assuming it happened overnight.
This update alone is not a reason to replace a working smart-home setup. First identify the exact model and its supported software. For a purchase, check the accessory’s network, hub, app and account requirements against what you actually own. Include backup entry in a lock decision. Our guide, Smart Locks: What Matters (and What Doesn’t), covers those buying checks.
No. Check the Apple TV separately using its own Software Updates menu.
Apple’s descriptions do not establish door unlocking or camera takeover. They identify issues worth patching, not evidence that your particular home has been compromised.
First check your exact model and available updates. Make a replacement decision around support and your setup’s requirements, not the headline alone.
